Sunanda Pushkar fails to save Shashi Tharoor

Sunanda Pushkar, the executive friend of Shashi Tharoor surrendered her sweat equity worth Rs.70 crore in the controversial Cochin IPL team in a bid to save her close friend's political future. In a statement issued through her lawyer Ashish Mehtam Sunanda said: As a woman professional, I am shocked to find how easily certain parties with vested interest questioned my credentials merely because I am a woman. I, therefore, voluntarily offer to return to Rendezvous the sweat equity they had offered me.''

Eventhough she surrendered her "sweat equity" she could not save her friend Mr. Tharoor, who was asked to resign from the Manmohan Singh led UPA government. Mr. Tharoor who held discussions with the congress core committee and the senior cabinet trio of Dr.Singh, Pranab Mukherjee and A.K Antony was asked to quit till his innocence is proved. Mr. Tharoor had denied the charge that he had any financial stake in the Kochi team and claimed that he was only “mentoring'' it being an MP from Kerala.

Sunanda Pushkar is a top level management executive working with a Dubai based infrastructure company. She has wide range of experience in international business which was utilized by Rendezvous which bagged the IPL bid for the Cochin team. She was reportedly offered a sweat equity worth 70 crores which later snowballed into a controversy once Mr. Modi, the IPL chairman and Mr.Tharoor started accusing each other through the Twitter and the media. This ended in Mr. Tharoor losing his ministerial berth.

It is a known fact Mr.Tharoor had more enemies in his own party than in the opposition parties. The man with enviable track record was always a target of the second level politicians within the INC. It was reported that Mr.Tharoor was close to Sunanda Pushkar and was planning to marry her. They were reportedly seen together in many functions which added fuel to the fire. There were speculations that Sunanda is a proxy for Mr.Tharoor in IPL.
The Rendezvous consortium which successfully bid for the Cochin team has accused Mr.Modi of offering bribe worth Rs.225 crore to pull out of the bid in favour of another company which was rumored to be the Videocon. At the end of the day political observers believe that by asking Mr.Tharoor to resign, the UPA is playing smart politics. Since the controversy started the Union Government has ordered IT probe regarding the allegations about the IPL. It is a known secret that majority of the IPL teams have opposition party leaders as the investors. The opposition parties were also shocked by the decision of the UPA government.

Mr. Modi who started the IPL controversy is now facing the axe as every one else is running for cover from the probe conducted by the central agencies. Union minister Pawar who is also the BCCI president and the BCCI itself has left the once powerful Modi as it doesn't want to come in the cross fire between Modi and the Union Government.
